Alcohol consumption is associated with both health risks and social harms and alcohol misuse carries significant public health costs. Increased access to alcohol outlets, such as a higher density of stores or being able to purchase alcohol within a short distance of the home, is linked to greater alcohol consumption and related harms.
The Thriving Perth Portal data layers help understand access to alcohol in areas across Perth and Western Australia. The addresses of all premises / businesses licensed to sell alcohol were obtained from the department of racing gaming and liquor and geocoded.

Two layers are presented on the portal:
1. Off-premises outlets – licensed for the sale of alcohol to take away for off premises consumption (e.g., bottle shops)
2. On-premises outlets – licensed for the sale of alcohol for consumption on premises (e.g., hotels, taverns, small bars, restaurants).
Our Close By analysis and data layer shows the number of off-premises and on-premises outlets accessible within 1km / 15 minute walk of each residential street block was computed and mapped.
