A lack of safety is widely acknowledged as one of the main barriers preventing people from cycling.
The BikeSpot 2023 national survey provided an opportunity for people to share their experiences of cycling safety.
Participants added Safe and Unsafe ‘spot’ for cycling to a map and answered location specific questions (safe/unsafe, reasons/issues, etc.) and some additional questions about the user (age, gender, riding confidence, etc.). People could also comment on existing spots already added to the map or add their support for an existing spot.
The BikeSpot 2023 results and data have been made available for use and we have added the Western Australia data to the Thriving Perth Portal. This allows users to overlay community-sourced cycling insights with the portal’s extensive range of spatial layers.
We have also added crash data involving cyclists (or bikes) from the Main Roads WA Crash Information dataset (2019-2023) and the bike counter data from Main Roads WA.
Find the BikeSpot, crash data and bike counts in the portal under the ‘Cycling Safety’ theme.
